Music is therapy

Music is therapy when it helps you connect with a conscious, heart felt experience of life. It is an age old philosophy that claims that “music heals”, or assists with healing. Music is therapy when employed as a direct tool by a trained music therapist or when played as background music for other therapy practice. It is no secret that music can calm the mind and soothe the soul. Music can also have a powerfully therapeutic influence at home or at work.

Music is therapy primarily because of its ability to reach and harmonize, uplift, inspire and focus all facets of the being – physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual. Therefore therapists commonly uses music to help clients improve or maintain their health much like supermarkets and restaurants employ music as a means to manipulate their client’s state of mind. A trained music therapist follows a protocol in an interpersonal process and professional music therapy is a health profession recognized by the allied health council. These therapists claim music is therapy based on a field of scientific research studies that poses correlations between the process of, for example, clinical therapy and biomusicology, and includes musical acoustics, music theory, psychoacoustics, embodied music cognition and comparative musicology.

Music is therapy when used by healing amateurs, especially relaxation music. The “Relaxation Music” genre was placed in the foreground during the 1990′s when the record industry suddenly caught on to the idea that the millions of busy, stressed out people around the world could be sold fortunes worth of music that promise to improve sleep, study, focus, productivity and stress release. “Relaxation Music” followed closely on the heals of the esoteric and therefore less commercially viable New Age movement. It became a massive commercial enterprise with the popularity of the Body-Mind-Spirit industry that sells anything from soap to vitamins and, of course, music, to a public hungry, and in need of, physical, mental and spiritual healing.

Music is therapy when it helps you connect with a conscious, heart felt experience of life. A healthy, conscious  connection to life, holistically, in the sense of body, mind and spirit harmony is an uplifting experience that imbues one with a sense of healing. This begins with relaxing body and mind, soothing the nervous system and fine-tuning one’s conscious awareness. Being Ambient Music Therapy is especially composed with considerations of such healing, consciousness activating qualities.

Music used for therapeutic purposes has much to offer the healing specialist or the casual listener. Music composed for relaxation, especially when created with compositional integrity is a powerful tool that requires only the free time to use. Relaxation music is used everywhere from professional spas to home massage therapists. Musical taste is always personal; one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure. What one individual experience as uplifting may bore another, the screech and scream of non ambient music may energize some and irate others. You always intuitively choose the music most beneficial to your mood and temperament to improve your vitality and well-being. This music you choose will naturally not always be the same.

When music that is not strictly speaking therapeutic helps one to feel better because it takes the mind off your worries, or helps with the release of blockages, fears or other emotions then that music clearly has therapeutic value. As such music for therapy can not easily be quantified by specifics such as genres, as every individual will find different qualities in different compositions that soothes and centers him or her, or that disturbs one.

A golden rule: keep an open mind, and let your being choose the music that is the right therapy for you at the time of your choice. It is wise to think about music as a vibration, or energy that influences the state of your being and quality of life, just like your dietary choice and mental world does. Positive thoughts, and a healthy, natural diet plays an important role in well-being, so does positive, uplifting music. A wise old adage states that one can eat to live, or live to eat. It pays handsomely to listen to music not only as entertainment, always remember that music is therapy, and at that, a most accessible and pleasant therapy. Music is therapy – all you have to do is listen.
